The Weekend Menu

Camp Cook

Welcome to the latest edition of The Weekend Menu, presented by St. Lawrence Grill Works.

Cooking on a camping trip brings all sorts of logistical challenges. Picking a recipe, packing all the ingredients and gear, getting the fire right, getting the timing right, cooking with a headlamp for light. But like many things, the greater the effort the greater the reward. Food (and whiskey) just taste better when they are rewards after a great day in the great outdoors.

Here are a few things worth checking out this weekend:

  1. Cast iron Dutch oven stew and cobbler — One of my favorite camping trips was to Palo Duro Canyon, where a friend revealed that he was something of a Michelin starred camp cook. He made great use of a Dutch oven lined with tin foil (to make clean up easier). Here are a couple of recipes to try out next time you camp.

  2. Guide to state parks and national parks — Find someplace nearby, and get outside.

  3. Tree Planting PSA — For those in TX, this is the best time of year to plant a new tree as it will have time to take root before the brutal summer heat. So break out the shovel and beautify your yard. In case you missed it in one of our earlier editions, Stark Bro’s is cool website for buying trees.

  4. “Hunger is the best sauce.” — Miguel de Cervantes
