The Weekend Menu

Wildlife

Welcome to the latest edition of The Weekend Menu, presented by St. Lawrence Grill Works.

With the arrival of Fall comes a host of outdoor activities. For some, that includes time out in the field hunting. We have a lot of respect for those who carry on the traditions and care for the wild places.

Here are a few things worth checking out this weekend:

  1. Meat Eater — Steven Rinella is a renaissance man in the hunting world. His cookbook is an awesome resource for anyone starting out with cooking wild game of all sorts. One that stood out to me was a recipe for curry fish with coconut rice. Even if hunting and fishing isn’t really your cup of tea, his thoughtful response to a vegan’s question at a book signing event is worth checking out.

  2. Back 40 Series — Owning and caring for a piece of land has long been an aspiration of mine. This series is an ongoing project that Steven Rinella and company have undertaken to show what goes into cultivating a healthy habitat.

  3. “The most appealing daily schedule I know is that of a turn-of-the-century Danish aristocrat. He got up at four and set out on foot to hunt black grouse, wood grouse, woodcock, and snipe. At eleven he met his friends, who had also been out hunting alone all morning. They converged “at one of these babbling brooks,” he wrote. He outlined the rest of his schedule. “Take a quick dip, relax with a schnapps and a sandwich, stretch out, have a smoke, take a nap or just rest, and then sit around and chat until three. Then I hunt some more until sundown, bathe again, put on white tie and tails to keep up appearances, eat a huge dinner, smoke a cigar and sleep like a log until the sun comes up again to redden the eastern sky. This is living…. Could it be more perfect?” — Annie Dillard
